Deewan-e-Aam

DEWAN-E-AAM QUADRANGLE:

This vast court measuring 223 by 140 meters was originally enclosed on four sides, by rows of vaulted chambers, with central gateways on the west, south and east sides. All those chambers have disappeared. Originally, this quadrangle was part of Akbar’s Palace. The open area was used as camping ground. In the south East comer, Tosha Khana and ammunition store area was built.

British Army demolished the southern wall and stairs were created to sit and watch the army parade.

On eastern side of the quadrangle, is situated main gate of Lahore Fort known as Akbari gate. British army demolished the haveli and erected several barracks for soldiers. After 1950, all debris of these later periods additional structures were removed and original layout of the quadrangle was restored.

DEWAN-E-AAM (Hall of Public Audience):

This occupies the middle of the northern side of Deewan-e-Aam quadrangle; built by Emperor Shah Jahan in 1631-33.

It is a 40-pillared hall, in front of the Jharoka of Daulat Khana-e-Khas-o-Aam, built by Emperor Akbar. The work was completed under the supervision of Asif Khan in three years.

The hall measures 57×18 meters, with a height of 1O meters. The present structure represents early British period reconstruction. The original had been destroyed during Sikh civil war.

This hall was used as a dispensary during the British rule.

Punjab Walled Cities and Heritage Areas Authority is doing conservational works in Diwan e Aam soon it will be ready for tourists.
